Eleusis Grotto

Eleusis Grotto

Grotto in Sanctuary of Eleusis on the way to the temple, with ruins of a temple to Hades in foreground. A reenactment of Persephone’s return was probably performed here at night during the several-day festival of the Mysteries. The small opening on the right side of the grotto was only visible from this angle, so a priestess could have stepped through it into the torchlit grotto to appear as if by magic.
