Ellen Brundige on the Island of Naxos

Ellen Brundige on the Island of Naxos

What a beautiful island — I don’t feel so sorry for Ariadne now that she was abandoned here by Theseus (the rat), if Dionysos truly met her here! Rumor has it these marble ruins are that of a half-finished temple to Dionysos, but that may be because of his later associations with the island and the lady he found there. There’s no records left to say, and nearly all the stones were carried away to be used as building blocks for the medieval town beside it.
